The Media Park in Hilversum will be the setting for the start of the 24-hour Hydrogen Challenge 2024. The participants will gather in the building of De Radiofabriek. There they will also meet the guests of the radio program Future Friday. At 13:45 the participants will leave the Media Park for their 24-hour hydrogen adventure.
Hydrogen and mobility
Driving on hydrogen is not new. It has been possible for about 10 years. At the start of the first edition of the 24-hour Hydrogen Challenge, the Netherlands only had three hydrogen filling stations. That number has now grown to almost 30. And there are initiatives for many more filling stations.
In addition, the supply of cars is increasing. BMW has announced that it will launch a new model in 2028 in collaboration with Toyota.
The real breakthrough will come from the vans. The Netherlands has about one million vans. They too must switch to zero emissions. Renault and Stellantis, among others, are now launching affordable hydrogen-powered vans with a considerable range.
About the 24-hour Hydrogen Challenge
This event makes visible what is possible and impossible with hydrogen mobility. The first edition took place in 2017. Since then, the format has quickly gone international. It has also been organised in Germany and Denmark, among others. In 2024, it will be organised for the 15th time.
The participants have 24 hours to earn as many points as possible. They receive these for kilometres travelled, refuelling, countries visited and for checking in at ‘hot spots’. Their knowledge is also tested with questions and an online ‘pub quiz’.
They choose their own route. Their adventures can be followed live.
